analog

I like the restrictions of using analog equipment when i can. l think I can get into a loop of thought when I have too many options.

We had a workshop where we were using Tape machine to create sound loops with various objects and instruments. I was inspired by moving around the speaker to distort the sound and using an amp to record that back into the tape machine.

experimentation

In the past year I rediscovered my love for creating with sound. In my first year at University I will use this time to experiment with new technology and ways of working.

I recently watched a show in my hometown at the weekend and there was a man who had a large stick with branches coming off that had been whittled down and he had placed contact microphones at the end of each branch. He then played the stick with a violin bow and the sound was very interesting. Long echoing shrieking sounds.

immediate

During College I became interested in Automatism in art. In early 20th century phycoanalysts used this method to bring foward subconcious thought in their patients. Phycoanalysts such as Sigmound Freud used automatic drawing and writing to explore the subconcoius later inspiring Surrealist artsits who applied this idea to fine art.

Andre Breton, the leader of the Surrealist movement in Paris described automatism in Manifesto of Surrealism as:‘…the dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason and outside all moral or aesthetic concerns.’

I chose to explore this in college as I was interested in the subconcios, Spirituality and the collective conciousness.

Automatism is a creative technique for producing artworks without thought, will or intervention from the conscious mind. I used the nightime when I coudn’t sleep to write and draw. During the night I would find it easier to slip into a hypnotic state. From the moment I was in this state I would start to draw or write and by doing this found an abundace of inspiration I could then build on. I continue to use this tool and apply it to sound and music.
