The human voice can convey emotion from not only speech but through pitch/pace/tone/rhythm. It also can carry aspects of identity. I would say In radio theres usually a stereo typical voice that is heard which is kind of monotone and droney but over exaggerates certain words to hook the listeners attention. On Radio shows aimed at an older audience of middle to upper class such as radio 4 the voice is usually more monotone then it moves up on a spectrum of larger target audience = how much forced enthusiasm is introduced. For example on BBC radio 2 (the most popular radio station) the presenters usually talk with a similar tone to Mr Tumble, always maintaining the same vigorous energy. In radio plays or documenteries the narrator usualy has a particualy warm and soulful voice. Maybe as this voice is good for conveying emotion.
I will think about “Music as Bed” for this project as what i understand that it is that it is music ready to have speaking over the top. For example if you watch a cooking video there will be music is the background. There is usually not speaking in it as this would be confusing and distracting to listen to whilst also listening to the intended voice over.
I have been given the role of voice over actor as well as script writer so i will try and think about pcing as well as how my voice can convey emotion.
a “music bed” refers to the instrumental background music layered under a voiceover or other audio elements, while a “score” is the complete musical notation for an entire piece of music, typically for a film or play.
As i have been given the job of writing the script i will have to think about how i will use poetry as this is something the group has decided they want to include. We have decided to create a radio play based on a short story i will write. I think i will focus more on the poetry and description as i don’t want to fall into relying on the listeners imagination. I want to create a strong sensation of the world in which the story lives and focus on following the main characters emotion as i think this will give all members of the group a clear narrative and something to lock in on, for example in the music. Amara is in charge of collecting/creating the sound fx. We’ve decided on a surreal theme which will hopefully be carried through into the sound fx. The begging will start at the bottom of the ocean and by the end you will be on a beach so the contrast in sound fx will hopefully be immersive and reflect the oppersite environments.
