Reflection
‘birds sing together’ is the initial idea for opening. composed on synth and vocals layered over the top were improvised to the drone. I sent this to my collaborator as the rough idea for the opening piece. This will then blend into a noise orientated improvisational piece
Overall i am happy with how the performance turned out. There are definitely elements that were weak and could be improved upon in time for example my voice didn’t sound very strong yet not vulnerable enough. I think this was due to nerves, a lack of soundcheck/ warm up and minimal rehearsal. I think the noise piece in the middle was mediocre, it definitely held a strong narrative but there were parts that felt to sparse and parts too out of my control (not in a good way). it felt too safe compared to our rehearsal the previous day which went perfectly. (i will include recording of this) due to us both holding back because of nerves. Jo played a lot less in the middle part compared to in rehearsals and my synth decided to slightly play up and not respond in the way it usually would for a reason unknown to me. However, it was still good enough to hold attention and i think the timings were perfect as just as when the noise was becoming too much of just a wall of sound we transitioned to the last song. After hearing feedback people agreed that if the noise part was too go on much longer we would have lost their attention.
Jo decided they were going to play with their back to the audience positioned behind a pole and i sat next to them in the center of stage on the floor with my apparatus splayed out in front of me. I positioned the mic resting on the floor so that i could pick it up and place it down when needed and i liked the sound it made when i put it back on the floor. It made it feel less daunting having these tools laid out in front of me as the barrier between me and the the audience.
I will need to practice my projection as this was a fundamental flaw throughout. I don’t think my voice cut through the guitar enough.
I think as collaborators we worked very well together as we work similarly and give each other space yet keep looking and communicating through eye contact. We also had already set out the structure so both had room to experiment between boundaries and then had prompts of when to move on which worked very well.
i will now include clips from the show….
