Term 1 -Sound Walk

Sound Walk 10/24

Using a zoom field recorder I set out from my new front door in Blackheath. My road was filled with school children filling out of the school gates and on the heath was the echoing boom off footballs being kicked around, shrieks and laughing. Inspired by Hildegard Westerkamp’s ‘Kits Beach Sound walk (1989)’ I Walked through the heath towards Greenwich describing what I saw as the zoom recorder picked up the soundscape around me. I walked through Greenwich Park to Collect  sounds of bird chorus and dog walkers. It was a windy day so I picked up a lot of blustery noise. If i was to spend more time on this project I would put the sounds into audio editing software and change the levels and cut out a lot of the sounds of wind hitting the mic usinf automation. I decided that i would do this when I had recorded something i found more exciting. Most the sounds recorded ended up being wind hitting the mic and my own voice. I will add these to my collection of sounds but I intend to go back to the park again and record a sound walk with a voice over.

I am planning to go on another sound walk around my home town when I go back over the weekend where I can record the beach and the amusements. I have also decided that I will edit this afterwards cutting out too much wind sounds and add a voice over afterwards as not to disrupt the audio. I also have the idea to do this walking around the care home but I will have to get permission from my manager as resident confidentiality could get me in trouble and I don’t want to exploit anyone. However there are some very interesting spooky sounds that float around a care home at night.
