Creative Sound Projects 2/6

In the Second session we learnt about different microphones. We learned about polar patterns and which microphones would be good to use for certain things such as which things you are trying to pic up/cut out. The Sm58 is good for live proformance/noise proformances as it is durable and it wont need phantom power as it is a dynamic microphone. It is less delicate inside and has a cardioid polar pattern.

We then set up microphones with the intention to pick up specific sounds such as the smashing of a watermelon; screaming; fire.

It was interesting recreating the sound of fire in the folie room. We used a flailing sheet to create the wind. Crumpled plastic and paper and foil and even bubblewrap to make the crackles and pops. It wasn’t entirely successful but it was almost there. This interested me as i tried to record the sound of fire before. I think i will continue to do this from real fire.
