In the first session we discussed radiophonic sound art. As i understand Radiophonic sound art embodies the same qualities as a Radio Drama or documentary but extends further with the use of sonic abstractions.
My initial idea is to write either some kind of poem or short story and to animate it with sound\music.
Rudolf Arnheim says:
“The wireless artist must develop a mastery of the limitations of the aural. The test of his talent is whether he can produce a perfect effect with aural things, not whether his broadcast is capable of inspiring his listeners to supplement the missing visual image as realistically and vividly as he can.”
—Rudolf Arnheim, “In Praise of Blindness,” 1936
I initially thought that radio is different to television because you have to visualise the picture in your minds eye instead of being given it like in television. however. Arnheim believes that aural performances that inspire the listener to imagine the work visually have failed to provide the necessary components of experience to the audience. I agree that if an aural performance relies on its audiences imagination it is probably very boring but done correctly can be more stimulating than a film or tv as it can transport you perfectly into someones world.
He believes a radio play “completes itself in the aural” whereas the “Relay” takes the audio from an event rooted in the real world for example a football game.
In Tim Crook’s book ‘Radio Drama” i read the section titled ‘SOUND AND THEORY PRACTICE Radio Drama is Not a Blind Medium ‘ and found out that we start being able to hear four months after conception. before we’re born.
By the end of this session we had formed groups and in the next session we will discuss ideas and roles. I believe my strengths are in the creative side such as writing the score or script writing.
