(These blogs post are intended for my final collaboration piece for this module which I will hand in for the assessment.)
INITIAL IDEA
My initial idea is to make a film with a collaborator who is either a dancer or actor. We will collaborate on the choreography and narrative and i will score the piece and be filming.
i think i would like to film in honor oak cemetery as there is an area of lawn and some very interesting places that would make a great cinematic backdrop.
The score will be recorded on synth and will be improvised. The dancer will then use this to dance to, after recording i will use the guidance of the movement adding sound to describe and enhance the dance.
I will be using field recordings, synth and possibly drums and maybe a wind instrument, maybe more but this is undecided.
inspiration:

3 Women by Robert Altman
I recently watched this film and it stuck with me for a while because it was quite hard to watch yet felt quite familiar. It’s dreamlike and the characters start blending into each-other. One of the three women is shown painting these large murals everywhere. They feature serpent like women with claws and men with big penises. They feel symbolic in a way like they’re cave paintings symbolising the archetypal characters in the film. I liked the score by Gerald Busby which is descried as atonal and avant-garde on wikipedia, it enhanced the empty surreal atmosphere of the film which is set in California. The film feels empty of life in a deliberate way. Because of the scores atonal nature it makes you feel very tense like at any moment it could fall into complete chaos. Atonal music has no home or centre which makes sense s the characters feel this way too that they feel hollow inside and they’re just a persona. The flat that the two main characters share feels sickly and uneasy everything’s too meticulous and the colours which at first seem bright and cheery becoming quite sickening as the film progresses and the atmosphere becomes stale then rotten. The colours start to feel like they’re rotting too. The rest of the film is so empty and minimal and then Millies character is surrounded by yellow like a child’s bedroom like they’re trying to cheer her up and make everything sunny and happy because her life is so empty. She’s so bright yet no-one notices her except Pinky who then starts to become her once she realises she’s not who she thought she was. The film is written like a dream so it doesn’t adhere to the same rules as normal reality.

Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren
This short film inspires me because of the way its shot and the symbolism. The creature with the mirror as a face and the woman behind the glass; these are simple but effective ways of portraying ideas with out the need for expensive technology and studios.

I’m inspired by all Elaine Radigue’s music but this is what i was most recently listening to. I like minimal electronic music at the moment because my brain feels very busy yet frozen at the same time and this type of music makes me feel calm but stimulated. I often feel inspired to work and have good ideas when i listen to Elaine Radigue’s music. I find it meditative as once i’m listening i’m meditating because i have to try to listen because of how minimal it is which means shutting out all distractions.
